The Eleventh Asian Symposium on Medicinal Plants, Spices and Other Natural Products (ASOMPS XI - 2003) was held recently in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province.

    The symposium was co-organized by the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany (KIB), the CAS Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica (SIMM), UNESCO Regional Network for the Chemistry of Natural Products in Southeast Asia, Kunming Association for Science and Technology, and Provincial Commission for Development Planning of Yunnan with financial support from several domestic and international enterprises and organizations.

    The theme of the meeting was plant resources, chemistry, pharmaceuticals and health, and its topics covered plant resources, phytochemistry and pharmaceuticals. 407 scholars from 26 countries and regions covering 143 universities, institutes and other organizations attended the symposium, including 121 foreign participants.

    According to Prof. Tan Ninghua, secretary-general of the organizing committee, ASOMPS XI collected 343 papers by 292 first authors from 28 counties and regions, including nine plenary lectures, 22 invited lectures, 46 oral presentations and 266 posters. Some presentations were highly evaluated by participants, for example "An Organic Chemist's Approach to the Enzymology of Polyketide Biosynthesis - Elucidating the Role of Type II PKS Components" by Prof. Thomas James Simpson (University of Bristol, U. K.), "Modern Approaches in Medicinal Plant Research" by Prof. Kurt Hostettmann (University of Lausanne, Switzerland), "Insects and Their Gut Bacteria Influence Plant Defense Reactions" by Prof. Wilhelm Boland (Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Germany), "Chemistry of Tetrodotoxin and Ciguatoxin" by Prof. Minoru Isobe (Nagoya University, Japan), and "Progress on the Researches in Kunming Institute of Botany about Chemical Components of Medicinal Plants and Drug Discovery" by Prof. Xiao-Jiang Hao (KIB, China).

    ASOMPS XI was held in China for the first time and has received great attention in the fields of chemistry and pharmacy in China, especially natural products chemistry and drug discovery. Eleven members of CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering sit on the national advisory and organizing committees of the conference. Professor Jun Zhou, a CAS member from KIB, and CAS Vice President Chen Zhu chaired the organization and advisory committees, respectively.

    A grand gathering of unprecedented attendance in the field of natural products chemistry in China, the ASOMPS XI will promote development in the fields of chemistry and pharmacy, especially natural products chemistry and drug development, in this country, as well in Asia and the whole world.
